Blackberry Messenger Links with Facebook using 2D Barcode
Yesterday, Research In Motion hinted at some up coming changes for their Blackberry Messenger application. They wanted to make sure that everyone was using Blackberry Messenger version 188.8.131.52 and said you would notice the changes very soon. It was also said that you would not need to upgrade your BBM to see the changes.
The first change is here. Well, this is not really much of a change however it is something. Using your Blackberry Messenger Device PIN, you can now create custom 2D Barcodes using a new Blackberry Messenger Barcode Facebook application. To do this you must have a facebook and log into it. Then, using the new 2D Barcode designer you can color code these barcodes and customize them to meet your personal styles. Then generate your fully colored and customized BBM barcode after which you could place it into your facebook. NO MORE BLACK AND WHITE!
After testing this new application on facebook, I have found that there is a way to email the barcode to yourself and NOT have to put it on facebook. Essentially you could go their to create your custom barcode and then put that code onto any website, blog, Twitter, LinkedIN other then facebook.
I am not sure this is something that we all were expecting as one of the new features RIM had spoken of, but it is kinda cool. Check it out and be sure to let us know what you think. Do you like it? Were you expecting this?
I did purple and baby blue.
I tried White/Red but mine is messed up, check this out...
The BarCode should you up in the box and not get cut off...
I assume this is because of their server overload they speak about in their update. Hopefully it will fix itself or I may just recreate it.
kinda of topic on this thread but I dunno if it's the new .517 OS that I just installed or if this is another thing RIM was talking about adding to BBM. I just noticed when I was typing in BBM that the word would automatically appear as I was typing. For example I would type ST and then the OP would show up to finish the word Stop and it's doing that for all words. Anyone else notice this??
That has been a native feature of the sms on O.S. 5.XXX, though I'm not sure if it was previously implemented on bbm.

Back to the topic...
I think this is a great idea by RIM...I'm gonna do this as soon as I get home...see how many of my friends add me!

Mine is cut off like that.
I also picked red and white.
I might just change the colour of my code.
Well its not the colour codes doing it. just changed mine and its still wrong.

mines off center too, still not fixed
Edit: Ok the image works with the BB Tour, but it won't even scan because it's to small, fail sauce

Yea, my barcode got cut off too, but I do like this implementation of the BBM barcode. its pretty cool
Its too small RIM!!! No one will be able to scan that!...on the other hand... Why don't they just make it so you can put it separately on the sidebar of facebook or something?...tried scanning it and ended having to do a battery pull because the scanner would not stop searching...did this happen to anybody else?
Work, yah know... They live in the stone age.

wow cool feature real nice
It appears that this is now working. I tried it again a few minutes ago and it worked as described. The barcode is in the image of the BB Storm (ok so it's the 9530 version) and published on my facebook page.
It appears to be too small, but when you click on it, a larger image of just the barcode appears and it scans with no problem...
since the qr code can be used to link to facebook , then how about barcodes with other communication types ? such as qq,MSN,
