Upgrading your Blackberry smartphone to 4.5 OS...
Follow these instructions exactly and you should be able to have OS 4.x working.
1.) BACK UP YOUR DATA! - I can't stress how important it is to get a good backup in the event you need to restore your data.
2.) Verify that you are using the latest version of Desktop Manager. Open BlackBerry Desktop Manager. In the Desktop manager program on your PC use the Help menu and select About Desktop Manager.
3.) If you haven't already, download lastest OS 4.x from
4.) Install 4.x using the .exe file you just downloaded. If you are downloading the OS specific for your carrier you can skip step 5. I other words if upgrading a T-Mobile BlackBerry with T-Mobile OS then you can skip this step. However, if you have an At&T Wireless Blackberry and the OS is non-At&T eg. from Vodafone, you MUST follow step 5.
5.) Delete the 'Vendor.xml' file ( C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader ) Or search your computer's hard drive for the "vendor.xml" file. Once you find it, delete it.
6.) Connect the BlackBerry device to the computer. If prompted, type your BlackBerry device password and click OK.
7.) Open Desktop Manager. It should recognize that there is an upgrade for your device. ('Vendor.xml' must be deleted for this step to work).
8) When the Application Loader Wizard is finished examining the configuration on the BlackBerry device, the Device Application Selection screen appears listing the applications and OS version available for installation. The selected check boxes indicate applications that are already installed on the BlackBerry device.
9) If you didn't backup first you should select to do so now.
10) Follow the prompts and you will have OS 4.x installed in about 15 to 20 minutes.

Hello - I took my BB to a professional place and they did not (or did not understand) upgrade the OS. So I am thinking about doing it myself..although I am a bit nervous. I read the tutorial.
Just to clarify the steps:
1. I have Desktop Manager software 4.2.1.6. Is it necessary for me to upgrade to 4.6? If so, should I connect my BB to sync again before installing the new OS?
2. Is this the correct OS that I want to download. I have AT&T Service:
Software For BlackBerry® 8800 smartphone BlackBerry Handheld Software v4.5.0.152 (Multilanguage)
Package Version: 4.5.0.152
Consisting of:
3. If I load the AT&T Software above, I do not need to delete the vendor.xml file, correct?
- Applications: 4.5.0.110
- Software Platform: 2.7.0.90
- File name: 8800M_PBr4.5.0_rel152_PL2.7.0.90_A4.5.0.110_AT&T.e xe
- File size: 89.31MB
4. When I connect my device to the computer, I should take out the SIM card and leave in the battery, correct?
Anything else I should know? Sorry for all the questions but I am nervous about making a mistake. Thanks very much
Another question:
In unistalled my Desktop Manager v.2 without waiting for your answer. WHen I click on the link to download Version 4.6, I get all these choices. I am using Blackberry Internet service. Which do I need? Thanks

That's the correct one for your device, and because you are on ATT you don't need to delete the vendor.xml,
The first option for DM should be ok, after the installation of DM is complete, restart the PC.
Install the OS to the pc if you haven't, connect the phone to the PC, don't worry about the SIM and batt the no problem if you keep then on the phone

Connect the phone to the pc, start DM let it run and it should ask you if you want to update the OS of your device

thx. am downloading DM now. Downloaded OS first. Got to something called Application Loader and I didn't go further. It's on my Desktop. Do I need to do something else before your advice on the last post? Thx
Thank you so much. You guys are fantastic. I successfully upgraded my OS - took almost 4 hours but it worked. All Aps restored including Facebook. Really appreciate the patient help. Again, many thanks.
Hello again - A question about OS 4.5. I use Blackberry Internet Service and AOL email. With the old OS 4.2, if I read an email on AOL and deleted it, it deleted from the BB. If I read an email on BB and deleted it, it deleted from my AOL. Since the upgrade, the reconcilliation is not happening. All deleted emails on the BB are saving on AOL and vice versa. I can't figure out where to adjust these settings. Any advice? Thanks much

Yes, I always click Mailbox and handheld...it doesn't seem to reconcile though. I was out all day and deleted everything from the BB and came back and most of the emails are still in my AOL mailbox. Are there settings on the BB or BB website to manage this? Thanks
If its only deleting part of them then it might be something with the BIS
I do not be leave there is any setting with AOL or BB to really help the deleting issue
From what i reading over at BlackBerryForums it seems like AOL has issues fully going through with the reconcile with BIS.
Here i found this if this helps any

Thanks - I think I figured out part of it. I went to the Messages icon, clicked the trackwheel -and then Options on the BB. There are email settings there. Need to play with it to see how it works. Thanks again

You can also delete andadd the email account that usually solves these kind of issues.
