Thread: FYI (factory reset on Eris)

This info is for my fellow Eris users (possibly any smartphone user). I did a factory reset on my Eris for the hec of it and upon reloading the phone, I could not pass the HTC screen. I remembered a trick that my boy at Verizon showed me to get to the main screen prior to activation. if you hit all four corners of the screen, you will then be prompted to activate phone. Once activated, you will not be able make calls other than to "*228 or #8899. You will not be able to send any data at all..text email nor browser. Each time I attempted to send a text or make a call, I got a network error message. I called Verizon and tech support advised me that some smartphones take your connection of the network when a factory reset is performed. She did something behind the scenes and refreshed my connection. I was back sending and receiving data. Tech support close at 11pm here on the east coast, so dont factory reset past 11p or you'll need to wait til next day to do anything.. Just thought I would share this with my BBOS Fam....

Interesting, I would have thought doing a *228 option 1 would have cleared it up for you. You didn't mention if you tried that. Did you try the option 1 too?

I apologize...What I meant to say was each time I called *228, I was directed to call *8899(its actually the Fraud line)..Thanks...

I have performed this hard reset on both my droids and neither one had this problem. I dont see a need for hard resets with the droids though, thankfully.

What it is if you do a factory reset AKA wiping the phone it will activate via *228 option 1. I was able to text and tweet but not make calls. What happens is that its a security feature and you need to call VZW for a new activation code.

I was told I could change from the BB plan to the PDA plan online but since I had a BB the Web site said I needed to change devices (wanted me to add a phone to my cart). I then thought I would activate my Droid & then try and change plans but it was a similar situation.

At this point, with the Droid already booted (and now after 12:30am PT) I hit the Activate button which seem to simply dial *228 and the activation failed (probably because the phone didn't match the calling plan). Luckily it transferred me to a CSR but then stated it was after hours (duh) yet gave me the option to press a # if I was having trouble making calls (option 3). This put me in a que for a CSR that changed my calling plan & activated my Droid.

I was happy and shocked to get assistance so late, so it can be done (or at least it was).

Now I'm waiting on a replacement battery which will be here Wed. but I wish I knew if the Passion was coming soon because all the Home replacements probably pale compared to the HTC Sense UI. (I've tried many of them & they either FC or for the most part don't add much in the way of functionality.)

Got a bit OT but I was able to get human support after 11pm.
