Spell checking and auto correction are the same thing for all intents & purposes. As you type the phone predicts what word you mean. And if you type it incorrectly it'll automatically change it to the correct spelling. This might help you; https://supportforums.motorola.com/message/61686

Actually though. The Droid wants to be activated before you can do anything (probably has something to do with using a GMail account). I have to wait until 12am PT & then I can change my calling plan via VZW's Web site. Ug!

Thanks for the link CJ but it does seem to be just Auto Correction, possibly smarter than SureType but at least on a BB you also have the option to run an actual spell check too.

Thanks again for the link. I'll change my plan from my "BlackBerry" plan to the "PDA" plan after midnight tonight and activate my Droid again. Hopefully I can overcome the 13+ reasons I posted as to why I may send it back. (I posted it in P3's topic comparing the Droid, Eris & Storm2 if you're interested I looking.)

Glad to be of service even if it was of limited use. I hope you'll enjoy your Droid. I'm loving mine. I thought it would be harder to put my Storm away but honestly I don't miss it at all.

My main problem is the battery was lasting 4-5hrs with limited use. I have a new battery being sent out Monday (should get it Wednesday) but Bryan said that he found Advanced Task Killer (free) was causing he battery to drop fast & I was using that app. Unfortunately, I had changed back to my Storm & had my Droid packed & FedEx ready to pick it up before reading his post. Now I'll wait until tonight and hope everything restores from the Google "cloud" as good as I have read. I hope I don't have to put 200+ contact data into their proper fields manually again and reset all of my app settings over but it's not the end of the world if I do.

The cool thing about the Droid is that all your contacts and apps are backed up to Google. So once activated everything should be put back.

As far as spell checker, when I think of that function I envision being able to have specific software go back and correct misspelled words. Neither the Droid or the Eris has one, at least not that I found.

But that being said, I found the auto correct function of the Eris to be fantastic almost ESP like. The Droid on the other hand was mediocre at best IMO. Once again just personal opinion but if the Droid came with the HTC keyboard that would have been winner winner chicken dinner. But the typing experience on the Droid leaves a lot to be desired.

One thing with the contacts Josh is that the fields don't match up with the contacts in GMail. There is one address field that has the street, city, state & zip. Whereas on the phone they are all separate and even when you manually enter the field info on the phone, they get out into the one field in GMail.

I agree about the spell checker, thanks for confirming there isn't one on the Eris. A big Android oversight IMO.

Did you ever try Better Keyboard Josh? Other than in the mode where it has the 2 letters per button like SureType I thought it was a bit better than the stock keyboard. I looked on the HTC site to see if I could download their keyboard but found nothing.
Are you still using the Droid Josh?

You are right about the contacts but it does provide a pretty good backup system. Some minor tweeks and one should be all set.

Yes I tried better keyboard as well as one called Touchpal. I actually thought both did a worse job than the standard Moto keyboard. Once again just my opinion after 2 weeks of giving them a thorough workout. There was also a lag on the Moto keyboard that drove me nuts. Maybe it's just some glitch with 2.0 but nonetheless didn't like it.

I still have Droid, the Eris. Just found that device to be more user friendly.
