I installed vmware then installed ubuntu 9.10?I want to build the android1.6 but its calling for java5 update 12 or higher(Wont build with java6 due to incompatabilities)I am unsure how to install a earlier version of java should it be installed using the -localhost tag?
Karmic ships with Java6 so you'll need to see if that old version of Java is in any repositories that you can add to your sources list or if it's available on Suns site. The easiest thing to do may be to just use Jaunty instead since Java5 is the default.Quote:

I have to agree with cj here. the way debian, and furthermore ubuntu handles its dependancy resolutions the java6 thing would prolly break alot of packages. the only way to have a current version with a previous java is to install from the minimal cd instead of the desktop image. and install all of your packages from scratch (which is how i do all of my linux installs anyway. linux is supposed to be custom not cookie cutter, lol) after you black flag the java6 package so you dont accidentally upgrade to it.the easy way out is just to use jaunty tho. just my 2c
I have several versions of java installed on my ubuntu 9.04. I installed a couple manually and others I used repositories. I have java 6 set as my default but I use scripts for other applications like older versions of eclipse. After you install another version of java if you want to change your default use the update-java-alternatives command and it's options. A file worth mentioning is /etc/jvm.
