    1. BlackBerry Apps

Future Scheduler, by @Appsicum, is a handy little productivity app which lets you automate various tasks and activities like sending an email, text messages, connect a call or publish a social media (Twitter, Facebook) update. The idea is to simplify your life. Follow a few simple steps and you will never hear "how could you forget my birthday!" Also, never miss out on a business opportunity or an important appointment.

    • Sync the device with Calendar.
    • Snooze function for reminders.
    • Import contacts from Facebook.
    • Log of scheduled activities.
    • Use templates for text and email.
    • Recurring events – once, daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly.
    • Intuitive and user friendly interface.
    • Multiple recipients for text and email.
    • Integrates with phone book to let you add recipients conveniently.

What I like about this app most is the fact you can set the app to confirm the update before it actually happens. This way you have a second chance to make sure you want that event to take place. You can pick this handy app up in BlackBerry App World for only $1.99!

Research In Motion CEO Thorsten Heins was pretty clear and direct with a press release this afternoon about the company's business status. The news wasn't great, trading for the stock was halted and as always with RIM, the negative news completely exploded out of proportion before anyone could actually finish reading the press release. So what happened?

Back on March 29th, RIM's Fiscal Year Report for 2011 was pretty bad. Heins promised at the time he'd be keeping people in the loop and today that's exactly what he did. In a way, RIM reached and essentially said "hey the Q1 earnings call that will happen on the June 28th is going to probably be bad." Here's what we can take from it all.

RIM will probably lose money in Q1 of 2012. Despite huge attempts at pushing BlackBerry 7, it simply hasn't happened and as a result they will probably report a loss this quarter.

RIM announced that they have hired J.P. Morgan Securities LLC and RBC Capital Markets to “assist the Company and our Board of Directors in reviewing RIM’s business and financial performance." Does this mean a sale of the company is imminent? No, but as we've known from the earnings call back on March 29th, RIM has been looking at all strategic options to see what's the best possible path to go down in the future. Remember those Samsung could license BB10 rumors? Nothing new here.

RIM is restructuring the company and hopes to be able to cut some losses in those respects. We know RIM is in the middle of letting people go, unfortunately, and while it's very sad, this is something a company that is struggling has to do to attempt to stay afloat.

RIM still has a lot of cash. About $2.1 billion to be more exact and that only went up in Q1. How does this make sense since they haven't sold that many phones? Well it's proof that RIM does do a lot outside of the hardware market as well.

BlackBerry subscribers up to 78 million. Yes, it's only a rise of about 1 million subscribers which compared to the 2 million increase last quarter suggests a downward trend unfortunately.

It's not going to get better for RIM anytime soon. Until BlackBerry 10 is launched, it's going to be ugly. Plain and simple. Actually, it's probably going to get even uglier than this before it gets better. Expect Q2 to be the worst and if, hopefully, BlackBerry 10 launches in Q3 like we expect, maybe that quarter will break the trend.

A new version of the Desktop Manager software v7 has officially been released. This one is bundle .60, one tick over the .59 that was available in the Beta Zone recently. No change log added with the update but we can assume this version is a lot better than the one that was previously released and then pulled.

It's kind of nice when the RIM heads give us a heads up on what's coming out. Last night, RIM PlayBook Product Manager and all around nice guy, Michael Clewley, sent out the above tweets in response to a question about the 2.1 beta OS for the PlayBook. Stating that the beta would be released at the end of May gives a pretty good idea it'll be out this week because the last day of May is Thursday.

The beta will be conducted the same way that the original 2.0 beta was done. We're sure devs are anxious to get their hands on the new beta and they will be able to do so very, very soon!

    3. BlackBerry PlayBook

It seems like it's an everyday occurrence that the BlackBerry maker RIM, is under fire from the media. The excitement over BlackBerry World has been trumped by recent talks of layoffs and the departure of more top RIM executives. The media are often quick to exaggerate news regarding RIM, and sometimes just plain inaccurate in their reports regarding the company. Every now and then its appropriate to set the facts straight.

    The Real Deal

It would be a bit naive to think that RIM has not had its fair share of issues, and over the past year has given BlackBerry users and investors a wild ride. The truth is, RIM is not doing very well now. Sometimes the facts are hard to swallow for BlackBerry fans, but the fact of the matter is that there are some serious issues that RIM is going through now.

RIM's stock has declined over 75% over the past year, and are down more than 90% of it's all time high in 2008. Yes, this is something that we have been hearing non stop over that past year, but until it improves we wont stop hearing about it. Before the holidays RIM's stock traded for $11 that is a far cry from $147 its all-time high in 2008.

A massive surplus of mobile devices isn't helping the company either. We already heard from RIM about their $485 million dollar PlayBook inventory hit in December, and their $267 million BlackBerry inventory expense in January. That is quite a few BlackBerry devices not being sold. Since then the value of RIM's current BlackBerry and Tablet device inventory have grown more than 18% and has an inventory value of more than $1 billion, according to data complied by Bloomberg. In short this is not good. No company wants to be in the positions of having a surplus of their product.

    RIM's Hope

A large part or RIM's future will be determined by the success of its upcoming BB 10 device. Most consumers are just waiting to get their hands on RIM's new BB 10 devices, but they will have to wait until later this year. Late last year RIM decided to delay the release of their BB 10 super phones. Critics have expressed concerns as to whether or not RIM's current OS 7 devices will hold up consumer interest until then.

The bottom line is that BB 10 is extremely important to RIM's success. It's not just a hit or a miss, it has to be a grand-slam. It has to deliver and it has to "wow". RIM's recent BB 10 Alpha device has already shown some signs of some exciting things to come. BB 10's rich UI and unprecedented functionality is already getting may excited and is helping to spark new interest in RIM's smartphones. One thing we do know for certain from RIM is that BB 10 will be like nothing we have ever seen before.

No doubt this will be seen by many as another top RIM exec stepping down due to the company's "turmoil" but in fact, that's not really the case.

Karima Bawa, RIM's Chief Legal Officer, has decided to actually retire and according to Reuters, "RIM said Bawa was in discussion with RIM about her intention to retire for some time.”
