Thread: How long after OS 5.0 is ready will Verizon release it?

I know this is a very subjective question, and open to a wide range of answers and speculation but it is meant as a serious question. If RIM were to take back they balls from the carrier jars they are held in and pulled an Apple attitude about OS launches, well the answer is RIM wants us to have it, but the carriers don't because it will "so they say" affect sales of new models. Well the Tour is just about two months old and the Storm 2 is 1-4 months away so why not release it, I mean do they think the real users will be happy with 4.7.1.42?

I would like to hear your thoughts on this.

interesting...i never thought about os releases being dictated by sales of new phones but it very well may

as bad as it seems and as picky as vzw seems they only release good builds which is a good thing, .148 wasnt great but it was pretty close to a gold code, in comparison even .151 has flaws major ones, mms? Thats huge, so i go with 3 months from the time vzw gets it from rim til it is on our devices

Well your poll is an interesting one because 5.0 for the tour is already out and .191 is nice and stable and definitely ready for prime time so I hear.

VZW does seem to lag when it comes to updating OS's and their testing process is good only knows. So what is stopping VZW from releasing 5.0 for the tour now? I have a feeling we will see the release of OS 5.0 sometime shortly after the release of S2.

See that's the problem you're trying to be logical in terms of how VZW releases their OS's lol

i think you meant god only knows but either way there would be some reason, maybe vzw has not received this build yet?

I so just forgot I was lookin at the Tour os... Apparently I am tired!

while, .191 is very solid there are alot of bugs that would prevent it from being released from VZW... its a nice build but nowhere near ready for prime time.. Higher builds are testing that are shaping up to be much more stable and have all the goodies included like tab browsering and BBM5 with the threaded sms as well as other goodies..

but as I stated.. def nowhere near ready with 191...

If BIS 2.8 TRULY is going to be released on the 10th of September, and it REQUIRES 5.0 OS, won't the carriers have to release 5.0?

Sorry if that's an idiotic question, but I'm not only very new to BB's, we're very new to VZW.

That is a valid question, but is BIS 2.8 really coming in September or is it later? We constantly see dates pushed back or outright dismissed. Either way they cannot afford to cede and more room to the apple upstart.

I've only seen one mention of a BIS release date of Sep 10 which was on Crackberry. However, it is posted in the "News and Rumors" section.

I would guess vzw would want everything to work for 5.0. Even if the os is solid many 3rd parties do not work. Prolly have to wait on everyone to update the stuff first before they would think of making it official. Just my thoughts

But the question has to be asked, IF, RIM puts BIS 2.8 out and Verizon doesn't launch it that means they can't launch OS 5.x which then means they would be behind the other carriers.

I see it this way RIM needs to get their stuff together and put out a solid 5.0 SDK so developers can be ready. I will say though based on the leaks so far developers should be able to get a better idea (especially with 5.0.1.91) on where RIM is going so they can get ready.

I won't even comment on a developer that has told me he is waiting for RIM/Verizon to fix the Tours OS so he can update (4) apps of his I use. Well my solution was to buy different developers apps that do work. So why is one developer having issues over another one who isn't. Did they code wrong, get lazy or just don't want to fix something in case it gets broken by the next patch.

Speaking of which where is the so called update OS 4.7.0.42?

Speaking of 5.0 (did I mention that or was it the voices in my head?) I was on with Verizon Tech Support last night due to an issue with my wife's Pearl flip. I asked if they had any idea on a potential release date of 5.0 for Verizon. I was told two things by the Blackberry Technician:

1. We don't know of an official date at this time
2. Check crackberry.com & blackberryOS.com for the 5.0 official release

LMAO by a Verizon tech. Nice. Very nice.
