Question about adding input language

I'm trying to help a friend add both Japanese characters and font support as well as Japanese input method to a Tour. I found an official OS release v4.7.1.105/4.7.1.53 from Reliance that has East Asian languages on it including Japanese characters and font support but it does not have Japanese input method. If I want to add the appropriate files for Japanese input method, which of the following OS options is the best place to get them from.

1) A 4.7.0 OS for the Storm 9500/9530 since that's the most similar version to the Tour OS.
2) A 4.6 OS for the Curve 8900 or Bold 9000 since that's the next closest version to the Tour 4.7 OS from a non-touch screen device.
3) A 5.0 OS for any Blackberry since that should have the newest Japanese cod files.

I guess ultimately my question is are the cod files compatible across different OS versions?

Second, after I finally select an OS to use for the Japaneses cod files, should I take all the files including the Japanese characters and font support files from the other OS or should I keep the ones from the Tour OS that I found and just add the missing ones?

I know about the leaked OS version 5.0.0.419 as well as the hybrids out there but my friend doesn't want to use any unofficial software releases.

Many have tried to get Japanese working, this could be the reason, that it typically fails (acc. to the above post, because the radio file is different)

That's interesting. Forgive my ignorance but is it possible to take the radio files from one of the Storm 9530 OS versions listed by yhamaie in this post and use them with the Tour 9630, essentially creating my own hybrid?

Actually, I have never compared the radios of different devices, but to the best of my knowledge - which is little here - I would not dare to try...

A lot of the guys that build hybrids seem to take the radio files from one version of an OS and use it with another version. Then again they're using radio files from different OS versions for the same device, not OS versions from different devices. Technically since the Blackberry Storm 9530 and Blackberry Tour 9630 support the same mobile frequency bands (and they might even have the same Qualcomm chipset), I would assume that the radio files are interchangeable.

If I screw up, can't I use BBSAK to just wipe the device and start over?

It should work (the BBSAK part of it :) ), dunno if a wrong radio could do any physical damage to a device, so what about this one:
"I know about the leaked OS version 5.0.0.419 as well as the hybrids out there but my friend doesn't want to use any unofficial software releases."
Wouldn't that be the better way then?

From looking at the files in the java directory, I don't think the OS version 5.0.0.419 has all the Japanese character, font and input method COD files. If I start with the 5.0.0.419 version, can I simply add the appropriate Japanese COD files from OS 5 for any device such as the 9700, 9550, 9520, etc?

For other languages that worked out, yes - still not sure about the radio, if the other member is true, the correct one is required for input...

Radio files are not compatible between devices, will not cause any hardware damage but the os will not load probably...

Dear Sam,

I do not believe that 9630 has been sold by carriers in Asia Pacific. So, Research In Motion may not have ever built any jAMEA, jEastAsia, jAllLang OS file which contains an appropriate radio file. (As I reported elsewhere in this forum, the Japanese Input option cannot be invoked without such radio file.)

If your friend prefers physical keyboards, he / she may want to switch to 9700, which has been marketed by various carriers in Asia Pacific. (8707h (Japanese-specific model / SIM-locked to NTT DoCoMo) and 9000 (basically global model / SIM-locked to NTT DoCoMo) have been so far introduced to Japan by NTT DoCoMo.)

it appears that Reliance has been selling 9630 devices in India, although the company has NOT released jAMEA, jEastAsia, nor jAllLang OS files in the past.
