coolest .328 feature my gf found i bet you didnt know about.

So were sitting here and she explains to me how when she takes her phone away from her to look at the screen or hit a button for an auto mated system before you even touch the screen it lights up. when you put it back up to your ear the screen goes dark again AND it locks. it looks like this new update fixed the issue with hitting buttons with your cheek and best of all you dont need any 3rd party app for it.:aargh4:

BTW i had the free screen lock on my phone from nanna boat and this feature wasnt working but screen lock was interfering with it and you have to make sure you hold the phone pretty flat against your face but way to go with this new feature.

yea it is but i never noticed mine working like this. it actually locks the screen so you dont hit buttons by accident now. i think i read the storm 2 was going to have this feature but i didnt realize it does it on the storm 1 now also.

all i did was removed screenlock cause it worked on hers and not mine. after my phone rebooted i called her and put it to my face and at first it didnt work until i put it flat against my face and sure enough my screen goes black and i tried clicking it with my cheek and it stayed dark. no more hitting mute or flash by accident. also when you take it from your face to check the time or what ever it automatically lights up for you so you dont have to click anything. pretty nifty.

I 1st noticed that on 1 of the previous 5.0 leaks. I was on a call and took the phone away from my face and the screen was dark but the function buttons were lit.

I miss the .140 call screen. when you were in a call all of the screen options hide. There was nothing to select on the screen unless you showed the keyboard.

Well, well, well. I hadn't noticed because I was using Patternlock. Very smart move on RIM's part.

I wouldn't say there's an actual proximity sensor per se, but RIM has built-in a new function that while on a call, while outputting through the small speaker, if there is a certain amount of contact with the screen, it will black out. It has to be a big enough area being touched in order to black out; it takes me 3 fingers on the surface of the screen to make the screen black out during a call.

Note that this blackout feature isn't active while on speakerphone, since you're most likely actively navigating the phone if you're on speakerphone.

Yup. It operates on the same principle as the setting on a laptop trackpad that allows it to differentiate between a finger dragging across it, and your palm. It uses the multitouch capabilities, if most of the screen has contact, the simulated "proximity sensor" kicks in.

IMHO that they shoulda used the light sensor for the auto dim. when your on a call that sensor is covered and it should go black and lock. I try to keep my face away from the phone so it doesnt get oily and by doing that my screen doesnt go black. I have still had the issue where it either mutes or goes on speakerphone every once in a while. so screenlock has been my app of choice.
