You should try getting used to what you have for now and in the mean time browse through the storm forums and the "Tips and tricks" forums. As far as operating systems go, everyone has their preferences, so what I might think is the best, others will disagree. Browse through the "Findings and fixes" threads to see what's good and bad about different OS.
For instance: .151 is very stable and works even better with the v8.5 hybrid by BBC, however, with .151 you will not be able to use a Direct TCP connection (which is the fastest) which means you can't use any apps that require it for streaming media and such, like Slacker and Pandora (internet radio). Others like the 5.0 OS which are really cool, but different ones lack different things (like a functioning camera - 5.0.0.191). Also, none of the RIM apps like Facebook work with the 5.0 OS. There are work-arounds for many of the glitches found in different OS, but you'll have to do a little research within the forums and decide what you really want.
If this is your first BB then spend some time getting used to it first and see how you use it. Find out what features you really like or what you never use, ect... once you are ready to play around a bit, there are always smart people in here ready to help you.
Hope that helps :)
David, Welcome to BBOS and congrats on your new addiction. Not knowing how long you've had your Storm I would suggest getting to know the phone first. Moving icons around to where you want them, things of that nature. Then you can check out the theme section here since we have so many talented people making a theme for anyone's taste and needs.
Then let us know anything in particular you would like your phone to do and we'll help you out from there.
First of all, welcome to BBOS, you will find that the people on this site are very friendly, and I have yet to see a problem that hasnt been able to be solved by the great people on this site. I would suggest, since you just installed your desktop software, to do as the others have suggested, and take a look around your berry, and get it set up the way you like it. Then I would back the phone up, so if anything happens, you can always put it back to the way you originally liked it.

Tommygrubz covered the main points. Read his post a few times to get yourself up to speed on the Storm.

These blackberries do nothing great at once, one of my biggest ongoing problems with blackberry is they truncate my emails randomly way too soon than what is allowed (I spent 2 months with BB tech support on this), and their signal strength (at least the storm) is second to the bottom (sucks).
There is always something in the beta OS's that you will find that does not work/works poorly, recently my storm with v8.5 and tried V8 would not transfer my contacts to my new 2010 Prius but the official v148 works, and on my Storm, seems to work just as good as v8 or v8.5 (this has been the kicker for me).
Now people will say no 2 storms are alike (very true) so that brings up the best question ever!!
If no 2 storms are alike then why is blackberry using questionable components or even better is how come their quality control sucks!!
With the iPhone and others coming out blackberry should just go out of business, they were great 2+ years ago but today they are just riding off their name (just a matter of time everyone else realizes this also) (Proof of this is my truncated emails and the no 2 storms are alike)!
Sorry if anyone thinks the storm or blackberries are great, but use a iPhone or iTouch, I can not see properly or even get to some web sites that I can on my iTouch, which is sad cause the iTouch was out longer than the storm and the storm can not do this to this day (or I personally think any day) come close.
But a huge thanks goes out to everyone on this site :You_Rock_Emoticon:for helping others and for the beta making people in at least trying to get this phone to be the best data phone it can possibly be!!!!:fing02:
Thanks and good luck!
Dfran1,
I am really sorry that your experience with blackberrys has not been positive. Both: Blackberrys and iPhones have their ups and downs. I wouldn't say each one is perfect as there are glitches/bugs/ and missing functions in both. The most important factor is what suits you the best and only you. If the iPhone works better for you and has all the features that you need/expect out of a phone, that's wonderful. I wouldn't say blackberrys are that horrible, as I have had positive experience with my storm and really anticipating storm 2 launch. I have learned that nothing in life is perfect, not to expect too much out of things, and that way I don't get disappointed as bad. I will agree that storm launch was really rough and buggy. It has made a lot of progress and I have been more and more pleased. If there is anything we can help you with or answer any questions you may have, please let us know. Also, welcome to BlackberryOS!!! :)
Welcome, Dave.
You may here mixed reviews about the storm, as with any other phone. I love my storm. I ahve had blackberries before and have been rockin the storm for 5 months. Thanks to people on this site, I have learned to do so much with my storm. Just play with it as muchas possible and I am sure you will begin to love it as well.
Wow. I couldn't disagree more. I would say the return/replacement rate on the Omnia is at least twice that of the storm, and I don't expect anything different from the replacment. I wouldnt touch an omnia with your ten foot pole, if you get my drift.
The iPhone seems to have a pretty good firmware and hardware base, but is currently limited to a less than stellar network. If and when a CDMA iPhone is released, I would still expect that I will have RIM handsets in my house.
I am thinking about purchasing an iPhone, and promptly returning it in 30 days, so that I can get an idea of how it functions in comparison, but then what I consider an important function/feature would be differnt from the next guy.
But as far as the storm is concerned: Perfect - No. MMS when it launched - Yes.
Not that I'm trying to be offensive or negative to your opinion, I am just stating mine. But at the same time, I dont think I would tell an iPhone user to return their phone because I had a singularly less than optimum experience with the product. A little harsh, but your honesty in your post is refreshing. I do disagree, but i think you expected that of a few of us:)
david 5452, I would suggest using your 30 Day WFG to its fullest, and if the touch screen isn't what you like, the Tour will be around long enough that hybrids will be plentiful, fixes will always come, and your calls will most certainly always go through.

let's stay on topic here...the OP wanted to know how to make his storm "run the best". this is not an iphone vs. storm thread.
I think its been suggested, but I would check out the themes selection here on BBOS (Cough, cough...maybe one of my free ones...cough, cough).
But seriously, themes make your phone truly unique. I would suggest trying a few and seeing what features you like best.
Oh yeah, welcome to BBOS.
