Thread: AT&T Stormers: Advice on best radio and Swap-a-radio

Hello:

I just found your site and am hoping for some assistance with my Storm without being flamed for being a newbie or on AT&T.

I am currently running .148 and am having some issues:

- Would love a suggestion on which radio is the best for ATT
- Would love to learn how to swap my radio since apparently I tried and was not successful.
- and yes for the record I have a iPhone but for work I can not live without my Blackberry!!! :01:

As far as best radio, I will let someone who is on ATT answer it since I am on vzw. To change a radio you can use an app by Lyricidal called swap a radio. Its very easy to use and has choices of pretty much all radios. Or you can do it by yourself and just copy the sfi file of desired OS radio into your cdma folder. Once you do that, run app loader and make sure to select downgrade when prompted since any other radio will be lower than what you currently have. In my opinion .148 has a very good radio but again I am not on ATT.

Hey LiLi, I'm basically in the same boat. I've read that the .90/.109 radios are about as good as they come for GSM (us ATT users are GSM), but no definitive answer if this is correct. I'm running .109 and my Storm holds a signal better than my AT&T branded 8310......it doesn't drop in the car while driving in low signal areas. (Phone on belt and hands-free BT kit wired into the radio).

How is your battery life? - With light-medium usage I'm getting just over 3 days with the .109 radio on the .141 OS. Been thinking of trying .148 or the new .158/5.0 hybrid, that is supposed to be better.

One think I would be careful with is the .90 radio....It was a great radio, nice color depth, but lots of people had the random reboots with it. I would say anything .109+ is great!!!

The 90 radio code is a must for GSM users.
Do a search on how to change the radio codes.
I'm on Tmo and I'm running 148 with 90 and it is great.

I have never had 90 reboot unless it was fighting with another app like ubertwitter.
I have a theory on it and I ask Jlevy about it and I am waiting for is input on it.

But like I said 90 is the way to go for GSM users.

May be I should try that combination too? I love the colors and the larger keyboard in .90!!! I remember hearing from a couple people that ubertwitter has caused reboots! Thanks for your great input.

Search for some of my threads. I have found that most of the newer radios work very well on GSM as long as you use a BIS connection. I am currently using .132 and it holds solid EDGE and never reboots.

I have to say that the .148 rocks when it comes to battery life. Left it on all night at 90% when I went to bed and awoke to 80% since the 9 hours that I looked at it last.

I am still struggling with the radio issue though. I have full strength at home with my iPhone but only 2 bars on my Storm and am still trying to reinstall the OS with the .90 radio code now that I moved the radio files. :dunno:

OK! I officially give up. I have now downgraded and re-upgraded to what I thought was the .148 with the .90 radio code and it did not work. It still says platform .181 which is the radio for the .148.:angryfire::angryfire::angryfire:

Lil have you tried using swap a radio to change out the file? It is the easiest way to do it IMO, and I use it all the time with no issues.

Hey Lil No problem

First for Swap I assume you have done these steps

Download the zip file for Swap
Extract the .exe to your desktop
If you are on vista right clicked and selected run as admin
then open program and make your selections

Here is how I used to do it

Download the .90 OS
Copy and paste the file that is INSIDE the CDMA folder from .90 into the same folder from the OS you want to keep.

In Swap a Radio, you need to point the program to the BB OS folder or it generates that error. I'm willing to bet you're not using the 'Browse' function to point Swap a Radio to the install folder under C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research in Motion\Shared\Loader Files\xxxxxxxxx (xxx's being the same of the OS you want to install).

Update, the best data connections with AT&T occur with the .90 radio......data just connects and there are no drops or lags what so ever. Problem is the with the .90 radio, the phone will reboot or lock-up from time to time. Several in the last 2-3 days, which do not occur with .109. (Shame is that .109 just doesn't have smooth flowing data with AT&T. (Both with .148 OS).

So do any of the radio files provide the outstanding connection of .90 without the other problems? - What radio does the 9500 use and would it work on the 9530? (Just a thought, figuring they're similar and if you're GSM the radio might work).

No unfortunately we can not put the 9500 radio into the 9530, but we are able to swap out each others Java files for the other. Weird i know, hope that helps

Well if no 9500 sfi files, any radio give the .90 performance without the issues for us GSM guys. (148 has no DATA at all and 109 is iffy, works in spurts were 90 just worked like no tomorrow). Unless somebody has figured out why 90 is so unstable and a possible fix by chance?

Of course my AT&T contract will be up in July (I think) and my wife and kids are on Verizon. (That would also get me 3G). Just love the ability to swap hones as I want, pop out sim and insert into whatever phone I feel like using.

I have to say that I am running BBCrackman's V7 with the .90 radio code and for the most part loving life!! No freeze up and supper fast browser speed. No battery pulls yet and has been stable EDGE for 24 hours. Wow! I think I may have found the holy grail for EDGE users!! :arms:

I am on bMobile network in the Caribbean and .90 gave me a lot of trouble.

Wiped and used .148 and haven't had a problem since. No reboots, camera is working, no dropped called and no VSOD.

Accelerometer is not the best but the pros definitely outweigh the cons.
