Thread: Help with a Memory Leak

I took the plunge and upgraded to BBCrackman's v5.1 hybrid but I seem to be losing a lot of memory and would appreciate any help. I boot up around 26 but I drop very quickly to around 19 or lower. I have the following apps:

VZ Navigator
V-Cast Music
Weather Bug
Weather Eye
StormSlider
StormLock
Visual Voice Mail
Facebook
QuickPull
BB Maps
BB Messenger
Windows Live Messenger
A few themes
The standard games that came with the phone

These are pretty much all of them... Any ideas?

weatherbug and quickpull have been known to have leaks for some people. the only one i have personally noticed a leak with is facebook, i had the app open for a good 30 min one day and my memory dropped 17mb in that half hour.

Weather bug is known memory sucker. I don't know about weather eye as I use berry weather. Hold down your BB key to check which apps you have running in the background and close those if you can. Check out which themes you are using. Most of the more complex, larger themes really suck memory. I use Crystal Clear and it performs exceptional. I had Appleberry Glass, and as much I love the theme...it's a big drainer on a hybrid OS.

I would first go down to one weather app, any reasoning behind having 2? Then make sure you set you're location manually and to update every 2-4 hours. I might also try only having one additional theme on the phone instead of 3 even though they are not being used at the same time they will use up the memory. You can always drop them back on and change them whenever you want, plus all you're app locations should stay in the same place even if you remove them. I am not sure but storm lock and storm slider (do they do the same thing?) I would remove one of them.
Try that do a reboot see if that helps any. I would not recommend removing BBmaps as it is used to run Weatherbug

Both suggestions above are excellent what do you mean a few themes? Every 3rd party theme leaks memory (compared to the default theme) some just leak less. May I ask why you have two weather programs? I would suggest getting rid of weatherbug and seeing if that helps. I also use berryweather but it does cost money. If you want to try another alternative for weather try bbweather, when I ran this I had no negative issues at all and it is free.

stormslider does have the stormlock feature built into it, when i had stormslider i unistalled stormlock for that very reason

Hi Brian, I agree Weatherbug is a hog even set at the longest intervals, but I have to have it, There is no other "free" program out there that gives the National Weather alerts as good as Weaterbug, living in the midwest with lots of storms, floods and tornados Weatherbug is spot on timing wise for alerts. For example the other day was watching the weather on tv and right as the weatherman said "new alert from the National Weather Center, severe thunderstorm blah blah blah, weaterbug dinged an alert" kind of amazing that it wont did'nt wait the full 4 hours I have it set for updating, it alerts you right away" that may be the reason it uses up the memory, even though you think its not running it most likley is :aargh4:
But it is a good program and have tried all the other free ones
bbweather is good and does not use as much mem, i even tried just using viigo for the weather, but fell asleep waiting for it to update :chairfall:

That is an excellent point to bring up on Weatherbug gate If the OP doesn't use it for alerts then I would suggest trying something different, the worst case scenario is that you can always put it back on if you miss it

Some weather apps are bigger mem eaters, if you said weather bug is good one why not just keeping that one, also you can check with them if they offer the sms or email alerts so that way you don't need to have the icon app instaled but you will get the alerts anyway, is how works for me, as for the themes, if they are available via OTA, you can bookmark the page where they are loocated and have only one installed, that way if you want to switch themes just redownlad the theme and you are ready to go.
Also make sure that allways close any apps hitting the menu key and selecting close, avoid to keep the I'm programs opened at al times (aka MSN).

Weather apps are your first suspicion. I am using berry weather and absolutely love it. It does cost $10 but there is a free trial. Might want to see if its better. I would also suggest keeping less than 3 themes as it really slows things down. I don't know if you tried this, but if you delete OEM wallpapers, you can gain up to 5mb more. Also look into Shrink-a-OS by lyricidal to add even more memory. Good luck.

In addition to everyone else's comments I have to point out the VZ Navigator is a memory whore so is Visual Voicemail. First thing I did when I got my phone was uninstall those programs and I have to see less than 40mb of memory.

Jlevy, I am with ya on that. I don't have VZ Nav and VVM, but with like 9 apps and 16 games and 4 custom themes, I still boot at 49mb!
