Can anyone explain the difference between a wipe and Reset to Factory in JL Commander? It's clear that a wipe doesn't remove quite everything but I have no clue what Reset to Factory does. Anyone tried it? Any cautions/warnings? THANKS!

Resset to factory will delete all the data on your blackberry work the same as the "wipe device" option within your security option on the phone
Wipe will delete the os of the phone trowing the "app erro 507" meaning that you need to reload the os
if you are looking to clean up the device without the need of reload the os Resset to Factory is the option
if you are looking to clean up the device and make a fresh os install Wipe is the option
hope that gives you a answer...

ok -
So, wipe removes the OS and Reset to Factory leaves the OS untouched and just removes all the user data?
So, if I want to completely get everything off the device, I should theoretically be able to do that by doing reset to factory followed by wipe.
For example, when I do a wipe, my email account stays on the device (as evidenced by its existence after reloading the new OS) Just want to understand all this before I do it.
Appreciate the reply and very helpful info. Thank you!

Your email account stays on the device basically because when the device is registered with the network automatically pulls the service booksFor example, when I do a wipe, my email account stays on the device (as evidenced by its existence after reloading the new OS) Just want to understand all this before I do it.

Just top clarify, A wipe will; wipe your phone to preset IF, you reload your phone is on a DM that does not have your pin stored in its database. If it has nothing to restore to, it will restore to factory defaults.
How come a wipe doesn't wipe the .sfi file?

Depends on what ur using to do ur wipes. I recommend JL_cmder.Originally Posted by chad88tc
It has 2 types - a return to factory which only wipes the data and user settings.
- a complete wipe which does what you asked - it wipes the entir OS off ur device.
Does that answer your question

To add to smc's comments, a wipe essentially bricks your phone rendering the SFI useless. So until you reload a new OS onto your device you have essentially killed the SFI file.
That is what I used, and before I install the os in DM, I looked at the details and everything was wiped except for my previous .sfi.
i dont wipe dont see a reason to do that added work. i let fresh OS do the wipe and restores it nice and pretty.
I was curious that's all, I recall a thread on another board, about the mms fix, saying to go back to .75 and
Upgrade from there. If the previous version .sfi is still on the phone, it wouldn't be a fix? Sorry for the hijack.

I've noticed that as well. From what i've gathered its a DM bug. All the more reason to make sure we back up our data first

Does that surprise you. I've seen a few people talk about downgrading to 4.5 or 4.6.
More then often i've had to uninstall and reinstall DM.
Real pain in the butt

If you want to fully 100%wipe, try resetting to factory then wiping. of course if you reload your backup then it will go rightback to your settings. anyone know how to reload your contacts only? when i do the database restore it doesnt give a choice on what i want restored it just restores everything. i believe i would gain a lot of memory by just restoring contacts. if anyone has a solution for this please let me know
if you go to advance backup the box on the left click open and it will shunt to your documents highlight the one you want to extract your contacts from. it will open and pool all the details
highlight the contacts only and click on the direction arrow towards your device.
done!

Google sync is also a great app for contacts and calendar events.
