Thread: On occasions I do not receive SMS messages

Hi everyone from a newbie to this forum!

Can anyone help with my ongoing issue?

I have a Storm on UK Vodafone purchased from Phones4u.

On occasions I do not receive SMS messages. I have been having this problem on & off since getting the phone in January.
I have had a new handset & a new SIM card but still no joy.
Vodafone seem to think my phone does not allways update on the network whatever that means.
Some VF people reckon it is a software fault & a replacement or repair will not solve the problem. Others just say send it for repair.
I updated to the leaked .141 last week & have been told it is exactly the same as the now official release. But i am still geting the same intermittent fault.

Can anyone shed any light on this? Am I the only storm owner with this problem?

Have you tried resending your service books. Do the following on your phone:

Options - advanced options - host routing table - hit the BB button - then click register now. Then do a battery pull and see if that resolves your problem.

Yes I have tried this (numerous times) & manual roams & battery pulls. In fact I have tried everything VF have suggested.
My phone will work fine for a few days, even weeks, then stop receiving SMS messages. The trouble is, I obviously have no way of knowing when it has failed.

That sucks that VF can't figure out what the issue is. Shame on them. Sorry I couldn't be of anymore assistance.

When you restored your new device did you do it from a back up of your old device?

If you mean did I back up using Desktop Manager, then thinking about it, yes I did! I only had the original handset for a week before the shop agreed to give me a replacement, I took it home & I think I plugged it into my PC to restore all my settings/contacts/etc.

Can i assume you are getting at this being the problem? I may have reinstalled some sort of bug?
If so, & if I get yet another handset how can i backup & restore my settings without installing the "SMS bug"?

Not that you need another device but you should try this;
Back up your device.
When complete go to Options/Security Settings/General Settings/BB Button/Wipe the device
When it boots back up, plug in the device, open the DM and go to Backup and Restore, click on advanced. Now you have two windows, the one on the right is your device the one on the left should be empty, on the top left corner of the left window is a "File" link, click on that and select your Backup.IPD file. This will open the back up in the left window. This allows you to restore your device one database at a time. I would restore only what you need, Address book and calendar. DO NOT restore anything else. It sounds like you have a corrupt database. Give this a try and let us know if it works for your issue.

Although I might wait to see what response Vodafone come up with as I have various different people from different departments looking into it.
Also, I get very nervous when I plug my Storm into the PC & start deleting/updating/backing up things, as I am sure one day I will "kill" it!

If I go down the route you suggest, I am just wondering what Info I have on my Storm will be "lost" if I only restore the necessary items?
After 4 months of use a phone becomes personalised if you know what i mean!

I def know what you mean! The nice thing about it is you will have everything on a backup. The only things that I do not want you to restore are the items that could contain IT policies or keystores that could contain the issue.

When you do it this way you will need to resend your service books as well. If VF gives you a new device then I would recommend restoring the data in the manner I suggest, if not, I would bet you will have the same problem on the new one. Just a thought.

The only thing that is holding me back from doing this straight away is that the fault is intermittent. I know for a fact that all the SMS messages I send get delivered, so no probs there. And most of the time my phone receives SMS. But on the odd occasion, (sometimes a few days between, sometimes a few weeks) it doesnt & I have to go through the whole batt pull/roam thing to get it working.
If it was a "bug" or similar I would have thought that it would be every SMS failing to get through?

Lots of variables involved when receiving an sms, mms and so forth. It could be that when a set varible happens it triggers the issue. Not sure, just a thought. If it isnt detrimental then I probably wouldnt go through the hassle. However, if VF decides to send you a new device then I would probably just give it a shot on this device just to verify if it works.

One thing I dont think I have mentioned:-
It appears that this prob arises only when the phone has been switched off & then on again (overnight etc) but not everytime if you see what I mean. almost as though when I switch on, & it boots up & gets a signal etc, something occasionally goes wrong. If however, all is ok then it stays ok (as far as I know)

On this subject, Voda have the 9770 auto message thing to test the send/receive. But this is no guarantee. Sometimes I send myself a SMS using 9770 but I dont get an auto reply through so I think that yet again my phone has gone wrong but I get an SMS from a friend or my wife so the network must be ok?

I find myself using this 9770 test message thing most days even though it is not 100% accurate. I wish there was an easier way of checking that the SMS service was working.

That is probably the easiest way to test if it is working, unless you want to send texts to yourself, but that isnt any easier...
Its really hard to say difinitively what is wrong with the device. The only reason I considered that it was a restore issue was the fact you have had the concern on two devices and the only thing they have in common is the restore.

I can't offer any advice here, but can confirm that I experience similar problems with my 9500 irrespective of the version of OS I am on. In my case however, I also find that when I try to send sms's I get a little clock next to the sms I am trying to send and ultimately the send fails. Only solution is to turn off and on or better still, is to pull the battery.....

My friend i face the same problem as you do!!! I have also had my storm replaced by a new one, and the problem STILL exists!! I am with Vodafone Greece. Apparently it must be a bug. Please let me know if you have found any solution to this

Do a sim pull! I had the same problem with the same carrier and thats how i solved it.

Meterberry is causing this strange problem!! I faced exactly the same. Had my handheld and sim replaced, no solution. I then tried to remember when it first appeared and i figured it out. I uninstalled meterberry and so far im fine

Do you have the latest version of meterberry? Also, have you been able to replicate the issue? And last question, if the issue reappears or you are able to duplicate it, I would encourage for you to contact the developer to resolve it.

Yes the latest. Yes i have. You are right. May be i'll send a mail to "meterberry" developers. Meterberry does not do anything ESSENTIAL that the bb OS itself can not do. I regreted that i paid for it, and i faced this strange problem for 2 months before i finally figured out what was causing the problem. It almost drove me nuts...
