Somebody suggested I replace the .238 VAD files with the .190 VAD files... and I used BBSAK to replace just those four files (others in the installation java directory are just for alternate languages) that were installed on the 8900. The device rebooted, and now voice dialing seems to be just about the way it was with 190. Not as good as it was with 4.6.1.250, but far better than 238 version that does *nothing*!

Also: Vlingo now works on 238, where it wouldn't work on 190. So you have two choices now for voice control / dialing.

    Jon,

Thanks for replying. I was beginning to think I was "on mute". I'm glad I'm not the only one who's having the problem. Since I use Voice Dialing almost exclusively with my BT headset, having it only work when not connected is the same as it doing *nothing* like it does now. I guess we'll just have to wait for the next version.

I will try Vlingo and see if that works for me.

    Thx,

    Dave

Dave -- until I got a new car several months ago, with its own BT capabilities, I also depended very heavily on using a Jawbone II with my 8900 and voice dialing just about every call I made. That was a huge issue for me, until I got the car. BT voice dialing with the car isn't perfect -- I picked up a "CPO" (certified pre-owned) bmw x3, and the bluetooth version I wound up with (provided by motorola apparently) is sophisticated in some ways, and lacking in others:

When I first pair the phone with the car, the entire address book transfers perfectly. I can see this, because when I switch the dash display from radio to phone, it displays one name at a time on the radio display, and I can scroll through all 440+ names if I have the patience.

Voice recognition is impressive in some ways. If I activate it (button on steering wheel), a warm rich voice prompts me for a request. I if I say "dial number", it will then allow me to rattle off a complete number, along with area code, quickly and conversationally, and it reads the number back to be *perfectly* every time after which I can simply say "dial number" -- and it does. The quality of that part of voice recognition is spectacular, and all handled by the car.

If I say "dial name", even though it has downloaded the entire phone book, it can only dial names for which I have recorded a voice tag in the car's BT system. That works well, but it's irritating that they left out the voice to text functionality, even though the car downloads the entire phone's phonebook.

The audio on the BT speakerphone is remarkable. I hear the remote call beautifully, and the remote party always hears me perfectly, and often says that it sounds like a corded call -- pretty amazing for built-in speakerphone. Just missing text to speech on the names.

What I've gotten used to doing is this:

I keep my 8900 in the cup holder in the center console. If I have to make a call, and it matches one of my pre-recorded tags in the car, I use the car to voice dial the number. If it's not one of those, I pick up the 8900 and invoke either RIM's voice dialing or Vlingo and dial the number by voice that way. Once dialed, they both allow the phone to route the call via BT to the car speaker phone.

Vlingo is definitely slower, since it has to capture the audio clip, send it to their server for interpretation, and send the results back to the phone. RIM's VAD does all the work right on the phone. Vlingo is a bit more flexible syntactically. The recognition success is different between Vlingo and RIM VAD. I suggest you compare both to see which works best for you. At least now you have two approaches to try to get voice dialing working on 238.

BTW: instead of reinstalling the entire 238 OS with the 190 VAD files swapped in, I simply used BBSAK to load the four 190 VAD files -- it replaces the 238 VAD files, the phone rebooted, and all is well. I imagine you can use CrackUtil to do the same thing as well. Far quicker than reinstalling the OS and having to set up all your apps, license registrations and folders again!

    Jon,

Thanks for all the info. I have a 2008 Infiniti FX35 which has a handsfree BT system in it. It also has a really good voice recognition system. When I make a call with it, I can hear the other person perfectly through the stereo speakers. Unfortunately, the other person says I sound horrible. I usually get a "Take me off speaker.." request about 2 minutes into the call. So, when I'm in the car, I use my Plantronics Voyager Pro headset which is the best BT headset I've ever used, and I've had about 10 of them. No one has ever noticed that I'm on a BT unit. Most think I'm on a corded call as well.

Are you saying that you are able to get your BT unit working with the .190 VAD files? When I had .190 installed, and had my headset turned on, I'd activate the Voice Dialing feature on the BB and it would give me an "Unknown Error!" message and do nothing. When I turned off my headset, it worked fine. I'd really like to have Voice Dialing again on my headset.

    Thanks,

    Dave

I have heard of the same issue before as well. I am not sure that there is a fix for this. You may want to play around with your compatibility mode to see if that will change anything.

When you get to the page you want to view, click on "page view". That will allow you to scroll the page up and down.

Yes -- works beautifully with .238

Although you can do it via direct OTA install, I tried that and found the download slow. Also, it only warned me when particular COD's that had the same name but different versions conflicted. When I tried again using App World, it was a much faster download, and the entire process of replacing 4.7 with 5.0 was much cleaner, since App World recognized that all the old COD's belonged with 4.7. People have gotten it working both ways -- I just found that, in this case at least, the latest App World did a great job and made it quick and painless to replace BBM 4.7 with BBM 5.033 on my 8900 running 5.0.0.238

Just noticed that .238 is now on the offical leaked OS list. which you can find here

    here is my list
    • BBM 5.0
      • It works with the offical release 5.0.0.33
      • Threaded SMS functionallity is avaialble
      • if you close a threaded sms chat in your BBM it doesn't close it in your messeges inbox
      • if you have a SMS chat open in BBM it will always indicate a new message while in BBM but not on the mail screen
    • Media Player
      • Works
      • if you skip ahead of a song you will not get any output via bluetooth (pauseing then resuming will get audio back)
        • This also happens if you let a song end and it goes to the next track
      • Also when i'm playing music by going to artist>album>then selecting a song. When it goes to the next song it goes to the next song in the all songs list not the album list.
    • WiFi
      • Works
      • connecting to secure networks that require login via web browser doesnt work. (same thing in 4.5)
    • Bluetooth
      • Doesn't work properly
      • would not connect to any device and couldn't access menu when bluetooth was active
        • Was able to work around this by going into my options while bluetooth was disabled and turning off all the bluetooth profiles
        • Then turn bluetooth on and delete all paired devices
        • then go back into the options and turn all the bluetooth profiles back on
        • Battery Pull
        • Repair bluetooth device
          • reason why I didnt just repair in the first place was becasue every time you tried to pair it said it was trying to reconnect right now and you had to wait till a later time
    • Blackberry App World
      • Trouble installing IM clients like Windows Live Messeneger
        • Would install then it would automatically archive
    • UI
      • Email Settings
        • Has one main GUI instead of a webpage
      • Applications
        • Moved from advanced optons to options
        • Organizes By Core, Add-ons, and third part applications
        • Apps downloaded through app world have full distctiption as to what they are
        • Search feature added
      • Media
        • Media is chagned to a folder instead of an app with music, ideo, ringer etc
        • Improved organization
          • Each catagory (artists, albums etc) tell you how many items are within it
          • Muisc now plays with album art on left side song details on right instead of alubm art on top
      • Most applications now have a find feature at the top of the page to quickly search through lists.
So this is what I found and I hope that this helps some people out
